Unemployment rate 7.6% in August

Maine's unemployment rate was 7.6% in August, relatively unchanged from the same month last year.

The preliminary, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is little changed from revised rates of 7.7% in August 2010 and 7.7% in July, according to the Maine Department of Labor. The number of unemployed totaled 52,600, down 1,000 from one year ago. The slight declines in unemployment since June are related to lower labor force participation, not rising employment, according to the DOL. Unemployment estimates include only those actively looking for work.

The U.S. unemployment rate was 9.1% in August, unchanged from July and down from 9.6% a year ago. The New England average was 7.8%; rates in the region were 5.3% in New Hampshire, 5.9% in Vermont, 7.4% in Massachusetts, 9.0% in Connecticut and 10.6% in Rhode Island.
