Baileyville mill gets OK for gas line

State environmental officials have approved a request from the former Domtar mill in Baileyville to link with a natural gas pipeline, a $12 million investment the pulp mill owners expect to recoup in one year.

Woodland Pulp LLC, purchased by Hong Kong-based Grand Investment Corp. a year ago, began working on the project last week, according to the Bangor Daily News. It will link with the Maritimes & Northeast pipeline that runs about five miles to the north of the hardwood pulp mill.

A spokesman for the mill said last year it used 10.3 million gallons of No. 6 oil. The Board of Environmental Protection approved the project for the mill, which is expected to be completed by year's end.

In related news, Gov. Paul LePage told Capitol News Service that he intends to talk to natural gas companies throughout the state to prod further investment and in January to ask the Legislature to consider enhancing the state's natural gas infrastructure.
