Unemployment rate dips to 8%

Unemployment in Maine inched down from 8.1% in April to 8% in May, according to the Maine Department of Labor.

The number of unemployed people in May was 56,499, a decrease from 57,232 in April. Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman told the Associated Press the state has gained 2,600 jobs in four of the last five months. Last May, the state's unemployment rate was 8.2%.

The national unemployment rate in May was 9.7%, according to the AP.
