Unemployment rate unchanged

Maine's unemployment rate held steady at 7.3% in December from the previous month, though Acting Labor Commissioner John Dorrer said the rate could rise in coming months.

There were 51,200 unemployed people in December, a 5,800 drop from one year ago, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Labor. Though the unemployment rate for December was down from 8.1% one year prior, employment measures have remained relatively unchanged over the past few months. Dorrer attributed recent declines in the unemployment rate to fewer people looking for work, and said that "as job growth picks up in the months ahead, the unemployment rate could rise as thousands re-enter the labor force."

The national unemployment rate for December was 9.4%, down from 9.8% in November and 9.9% in December 2009. The average unemployment rate in New England was 8%.
