Unemployment relatively flat in July

July's unemployment rate was 7.7%, nearly unchanged from the same month one year ago.

Last month's jobless rate was little changed from revised rates of 7.8% in June and 7.8% in July 2010, according to the Maine Department of Labor. The total of unemployed, however, did fall by 1,000 people from last year to 53,200. The U.S. unemployment rate was 9.1%, about the same as June's rate of 9.2% but down from 9.5% a year ago. The decline in unemployment is related to lower labor force participation, not rising employment, the DOL said in a release. Unemployment estimates exclude those who are not actively looking for work.

The New England average was 7.9%; rates in the region were 5.2% in New Hampshire, 5.7% in Vermont, 7.6% in Massachusetts, 10.8% in Rhode Island, and 9.1% in Connecticut.
