Winglass targets unemployment fraud

The new head of the Maine Department of Labor is targeting abuse of the state's unemployment system.

Robert Winglass, a former executive at IBM and retired U.S. Marine general, told the Kennebec Journal he intends to crack down on people scamming unemployment benefits as the new labor department commissioner. He said some people receive overpayments because they are lax about notifying the state when they no longer need their unemployment checks. "When we catch 'em, it's going to be an unpleasant experience for the folks who may have intentionally attempted to beat the system," he told the paper.

Maine law requires people who misrepresent their employment situations to pay back benefits received, plus a 50% penalty, according to the report.
