Unified Parking Partners, a Portland-based private parking lot management company, says that it will make amendments to its vehicle booting and towing policy as the city weighs its options for maximizing available parking in the city.
Half of the approximately 6,000 parking spaces Unified oversees in the city require customers to pay at a meter and display a receipt on their vehicle dashboard. According to The Forecaster, vehicles with expired or no receipts were booted until a Unified employee collected fees that ranged from $40 to $80.
“For paying customers, there will not be an immediate boot placed on the vehicle,” Asher Chappell, a manager and partner at Unified Parking Partners, told The Forecaster. “Non-paying customers will still be booted or towed.”
Chappell didn’t set a timetable for when the changes will take effect.
Unified’s amendment coincides with the City Council’s Economic Development Committee weighing options proposed by the nonprofit organization, Portland Downtown, in determining how to best manage parking in the city.
“What we truly need is the collective resources of the city to help us forge a path for best practices and strategic management of our public and private parking assets,” Casey Gilbert, Portland Downtown’s executive director, said at a May 24 meeting of the Development Committee, according to The Forecaster.
The committee will consider Portland Downtown’s recommendations at its June 28 meeting.
