Union files complaint against LePage

Gov. Paul LePage and his administration face a formal complaint from the Maine State Employees Association, which alleges the state is negotiating a new contract in bad faith and violating Maine's collective bargaining laws.

MSEA Local 1989 of the Service Employees International Union filed the 21-page complaint Monday with the Maine Labor Relations Board, asking the board to intervene in the negotiations that have drawn out long after the previous contract's June 30 expiration, according to the Bangor Daily News. Tim Belcher, lead counsel for the association, told the paper the state has been unwilling to make concessions or explain their position, and has gone into negotiating with no intent to reach an accord. Adrienne Bennett, the governor's spokeswoman, disputed the claims, saying the state has acted in good faith and that the union has rejected three offers.

MSEA represents more than 15,000 state workers. Negotiations are likely already headed for mediation, which could take several months, according the paper.
