Skowhegan-based Gifford's Ice Cream has purchased a Maryland business of the same name.
Maine's Gifford's purchased Gifford's Ice Cream & Candy of Maryland, which makes and distributes ice cream in the mid-Atlantic region, for an undisclosed sum, according to a press release. The families that own both companies are unrelated. Gifford's of Maine has retail and bulk customers throughout New England, New York and New Jersey, and operates five seasonal ice cream stands in Auburn, Bangor, Farmington, Skowhegan and Waterville. Brothers Roger and John Gifford began making ice cream in 1980, committing to the business full time in 1983. The company's ice creams have won awards in national expos.
Neil Lieberman, one of the founders of the Maryland Gifford's, will represent the new Gifford's in the mid-Atlantic region, including Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. The company was founded in 1938 by John Gifford and grew to operate several locations as well as a wholesale business that serviced restaurants, hotels and caterers. In 2009 the company decided to sell its store locations and focus on ice cream manufacturing and wholesale operations. The buyer of the stores, however, filed for bankruptcy last year and closed them, according to the company's website.
