The Union River Boat Co., a small boat company based in Bucksport, has closed. Its speciality had been making custom composite components such as hulls for other companies.
Owner Belle Ryder told The Ellsworth American the company, which was founded in 1994 and moved from Ellsworth to Bucksport in 2005, has not been able to stay afloat in a lagging marine manufacturing industry.
In exchange for two lots within a Bucksport business park, the company had agreed to ramp up the number of its employees from 14 to 40 over a six-year period. It had a number of well-established relationships with yacht designers, including C.W. Paine Yacht Design, Zurn Yacht Design, and Rodger Martin Design.
In December 2008 the boat company announced a joint $1.75 million investment with Lyman Morse Boatbuilding Co. in Thomaston to build 48-foot sailboats for an unnamed customer. Union River was to build the fiberglass hulls and other components, and Lyman Morse was to do the assembly and install the interiors and power systems.
