The Unity College Board of Trustees voted unanimously to appoint Melik Peter Khoury as the president of the Waldo County liberal arts college on Aug. 12.

According to the college, Khoury will begin his term as permanent president effective immediately to ensure long-term continuity at the school. The announcement comes a week after Unity announced record enrollment, 700, a 7.7% gain, for the coming academic year.

Khoury has been serving as interim president of Unity College since Jan. 3, when he was appointed to an initial 30-month contract. At the time of that appointment, Khoury was serving as executive vice president and chief academic officer.

“A year ago we set some very high expectations for Dr. Khoury,” John Newlin, chairman of the board of trustees, said in a prepared statement. “The truth is, Melik and the team he has assembled has met and significantly exceeded those lofty goals.”

Khoury has worked at Unity since 2013 as senior vice president for external affairs following stints at colleges across the country, including Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa, where he held the position of senior vice president for strategic positioning. Khoury previously served as vice president for enrollment management and college marketing at Culver Stockton College in Canton, Mo., and director of admissions at the University of Maine at Fort Kent.

“People outside of Unity College think I’m joking when I say our goal is simply to change the world. But we’re doing just that,” Khoury said in a statement. “One student at a time.”
