Unity Environmental University, a private liberal arts school in New Gloucester, has completed a $1.2 million infrastructure upgrade at its Sky Lodge property, a wilderness retreat in the Somerset County town of Moose River.
“Unity Environmental University is dedicated to preserving the heritage and enhancing the functionality of our beloved Sky Lodge,” the school's president, Melik Peter Khoury, said in a news release.
“These extensive upgrades represent not only our commitment to sustainability but also our investment in the future of this historic property. By modernizing its infrastructure while honoring its storied past, we are ensuring that Sky Lodge remains a cherished destination for generations to come.”
The project focused on the lodge building, where improvements included the addition of attic insulation, boiler replacement, electrical and fire safety enhancements, window installation, bathroom and kitchen upgrades, heating system upgrades and structural and cosmetic repairs.
Outdoor spaces will also be revitalized, with improvements to the classroom pavilion area, deck repairs, landscaping, plumbing and septic upgrades, new utility vehicles for maintenance and better snow removal capabilities.
“Our vision for this property has always been to provide a space for education, community and appreciation of nature. With these renovations, we are confident that the property will continue to serve as a beautiful and inspiring place for future generations to learn and grow,” said Elaine and John Couri, Sky Lodge donors.
A reopening of Sky Lodge is scheduled for late fall.
