UScellular has invested $2.4 million to expand 5G service in Penobscot County and Aroostook counties.
The wireless carrier targeted $1.2 million at four cell sites in Orient, Presque Isle and Van Buren in the County. The company invested the remainder in four cell sites in Bangor, Carmel, Greenbush and Hermon.
According to a prepared release, the new sites are among 420 UScellular now operate across the state. In September, the company announced it brought 5G service to parts of Argyle, Brewer, Howland, Kenduskeag, Vinegar Hill, Amity and Presque Isle.
5G service provides faster data speeds, more streamlined video chatting and better mobile connections.
"At UScellular we focus on providing ... a fast, reliable network to keep our customers connected to their friends and family," said Tabatha McKay, area vice president/general manager for New England. "Our engineers live and work in this community and monitor the network around the clock to ensure that it keeps up with the needs of our customers."
In 2021, UScellular, which was founded in 1983 and has over 4,800 employees, invested $95.5 million in network upgrades and the 5G spectrum across Maine.
