USDA seeks applicants for rural development grants

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that $290,000 is now available for business development projects in rural communities across the state through the agency’s Rural Business Development Grant program.

“The RBDG program helps provide rural areas of the state with additional means for pursuing diverse economic development opportunities, which can lead to job creation and the strengthening of local economies,” USDA Rural Development State Director Virginia Manuel said in a statement.

Applicants eligible for the grant funding include public bodies, nonprofits and Native American tribes, which can use the funds for the benefit of private, small business enterprises in their communities.

Projects can range from property development and equipment purchasing to technical assistance; planning and training; to revolving loan fund capitalization, according to a statement.

With the exceptions of Portland, Falmouth, Westbrook, Scarborough, South Portland and Cape Elizabeth, all communities in Maine are eligible to apply. Grant awards are usually under $100,000 each.
