USM offers new nursing degree

The University of Southern Maine will become the first school in northern New England to offer a doctor of nursing practice degree program beginning in the fall of 2011.

The University of Maine System Board of Trustees signed off on the program this week, and USM is currently accepting students for the program, according to a press release. DNP is a practice-focused degree that provides students with advanced experience in leadership and management. These programs are on the rise, growing from just 17 in the country in 2006 to 120 currently. The number of students enrolled in DNP programs rose from 3,415 in 2008 to 5,165 in 2009.

USM has the state's largest nursing program, with 441 students in undergraduate nursing programs this fall and 120 students in master's nursing programs, according to the release.
