University of Southern Maine President Selma Botman has asked the school's deans to develop reorganization plans in the face of a slimming budget.
Smaller state appropriations and an endowment suffering from the stock-market rollercoaster prompted Botman to call for suggestions for an administrative restructuring plan she intends to announce in August. Botman predicts a $4.3 million budget deficit in the next fiscal year, and university costs that are expected to outpace revenue in years to come unless action is taken to make the school more cost-effective, reported the Portland Press Herald. Botman said she wants to decrease personnel costs, which currently account for 80% of the school's $142.6 million budget for the coming year, to 65% of the budget, according to the paper.
Botman will hold meetings with faculty at USM's Gorham and Portland campuses to discuss the financial situation and her restructuring goals, and deans are expected to issue a detailed report to her later this month, according to the paper. USM employs about 1,980 people and enrolled about 10,000 students last fall, down 4.2% from the previous year.
