What would have been the largest influx of tourists in a single day this summer in Rockland and Camden has been canceled because of federal right whale regulations.
Royal Caribbean's cruise ship Grandeur of the Seas informed local officials Friday night that its Rockland port stop had been canceled because of a federal regulation limiting vessels to no more than 10 knots in right-whale populated seas off the coast of Cape Cod, according to VillageSoup. The 916-foot-long cruise ship typically travels at speeds of 22 knots, and would have had to pass through the restricted area on its way to Rockland.
The Grandeur of the Seas was expected to bring more than 2,000 passengers to the Camden-Rockland area, and local business had been planning how to greet and accommodate the tourists, VillageSoup reported. The other expected Royal Caribbean cruise ship, Jewel of the Seas, is still scheduled to dock in Rockland on Oct. 4.
