USPS fined for Scarborough safety violations

The U.S. Postal Service is facing more than $400,000 in fines for unsafe conditions at its distribution center in Scarborough.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited USPS for repeat violations of safety standards, mainly exposing employees to electrical hazards, at the Southern Maine Processing and Distribution Center, according to a press release from the federal agency. OSHA has proposed $430,000 in fines. David Michaels, assistant secretary of labor for OSHA, said in the release that USPS failed to give its employees proper training for handling live electrical parts, despite the organization's knowledge that training was required.

In December, OSHA inspected the Scarborough facility following a complaint from workers there. USPS has 15 business days to meet with OSHA officials, comply with requirements or contest the findings, according to the release.
