Verso mill gunman gets five years

A former Verso Paper mill employee who engaged police in a 10-hour standoff will serve five years in prison after pleading guilty to felony charges Friday.

Francis Smith III, who had been fired from the Jay paper mill six months before the March incident, was also sentenced to six years of probation following his release, according to the Sun Journal.

Smith's attorney, Walter McKee, told the court that Smith was depressed about losing his job after spraying a co-worker with a hose.

A company attorney told the court that the incident has affected the sense of safety at the mill and that the disruption cost the company an estimated $190,000.

Nobody was injured during the standoff, but Smith threatened co-workers with guns and held his former manager hostage for over six hours.
