Verso urges state action for paper industry

A new report from Memphis, Tenn.-based Verso Paper is calling on the state of Maine to do more to support the growth of the paper industry.

Verso, which operates paper mills in Bucksport and Jay that together employ 1,600, today released "Maine on paper: An industry we can't afford to lose," which highlights the challenges facing the paper industry, how Verso is tackling them and how Maine can help. Among the suggestions, the report urges Maine officials to support approval of an LNG terminal to diversify the state's fuel base to combat rising energy costs, and establish a revolving loan fund for railroads that would pay for track upgrades or new equipment to alleviate transportation issues. Maine officials should also encourage more people to enter the industry work force by expanding the Kennebec Valley Community College pulp and paper curriculum to other parts of the state, according to the report.

Verso President and CEO Mike Jackson was scheduled to present a copy of the report to Gov. John Baldacci this afternoon at 12:30, according to a press release from the company.
