Brookfield hints at reopening Millinocket mill

Brookfield Asset Management has said installing a biomass boiler at its Katahdin Paper mill in Millinocket, which has been shuttered since September, seems a viable option to wean itself off a reliance on oil.

Officials from the Toronto-based company told Sen. Olympia Snowe in a phone conversation last week that a study it commissioned last fall, after it closed the Millinocket mill and laid off 208 employees because of energy costs, is nearing completion and the verdict seems to be that converting from an oil-fed to a biomass-fed boiler is viable, according to a statement from the senator. However, Brookfield says it still requires a partner to go ahead with the installation of a $1.5 million biomass boiler at the mill, the Bangor Daily News reported. The company, which also owns the paper mill in East Millinocket, plans to start soliciting bids for the conversion in the coming weeks.

In her statement, Snowe said she would "expeditiously work to secure tax parity for biomass to ensure that it receives a similar tax credit as wind production currently receives."

Brookfield officials are scheduled to meet privately with Millinocket town officials today, according to the Bangor Daily News.
