Citing shifts in advertising revenue and a need to save money, Village NetMedia Inc. announced it will combine The Courier Gazette and The Camden Herald into one paper, called The Herald Gazette. The new paper will be published tri-weekly throughout Knox County beginning Nov. 18.
Richard M. Anderson, CEO and co-founder of the company and VillageSoup Inc., said economics was at the core of the decision to merge the papers, which serve the same general geographic area. Village NetMedia expects to gain efficiencies in paper distribution, postal and personnel. Eight positions are likely to be eliminated in the merger, according to a company statement.
On June 30, Anderson completed the purchase of six newspapers in Rockland, Camden, Belfast, Bar Harbor, and Augusta from Courier Publications, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Crescent Publishing Co. of Greenville, S.C. Village NetMedia also purchased the company's Rockland printing operation. In addition to the new Herald Gazette, Village NetMedia will continue to publish The Republican Journal in Belfast, The Bar Harbor Times in Bar Harbor and Capital Weekly in Augusta.
