VillageSoup to buy Courier Publications

The publisher of six community newspapers in the midcoast region and Augusta is being acquired by Village NetMedia Inc., the parent company of Rockland-based VillageSoup.

Richard Anderson, president and co-founder of VillageSoup, did not say how much the company paid for Courier Publications, which publishes weekly and tri-weekly papers in Belfast, Camden, Bar Harbor, Belfast, Rockland and Augusta.

He said the acquisition means changes to papers at both Courier and VillageSoup, with Courier's Waldo Independent and VillageSoup's Waldo County Citizen and Knox County Times slated to be folded into other papers. VillageSoup also plans to expand its web presence beyond Knox and Waldo counties to Kennebec and Hancock counties. Anderson told Mainebiz this morning the deal would "allow us to re-energize the legacy papers and bring them back to a level people are accustomed to."

Anderson also said the merging of the two companies will result in the elimination of 26 positions, "primarily" from Courier, he said. The two companies currently employ 129 people, according to Anderson.
