Jetport unsure about future growth

The Portland International Jetport's new manager, Paul Bradbury, says the city could delay its $60 million terminal expansion if the high cost of jet fuel continues to slam the aviation industry.

The expansion, which is planned for next summer and will be financed largely by airport revenues, would double the terminal's size and better integrate security functions, the Portland Press Herald reported. But most of the seven airlines that serve Portland have cut back their flights, and the industry as a whole appears to be preparing for a long-term contraction.

While Portland has not been targeted for reductions, airlines are constantly assessing where to deploy their planes, the paper reported. "No news is good news," Bradbury told the paper. "But I think the story is still coming. We don't have the data to draw conclusions yet."
