Voter registration system breached

The secretary of state's office has announced that the state's Central Voter Registration system has been breached, but it's unclear if personal information has been compromised.

Malware on a remote computer being used by a town clerk gained access to the voter registration system, which contains personal information of about 700,000 residents, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. The breach was discovered during a routine security check, and the secretary of state's office is investigating what information, if any, has been compromised. The database includes the names, addresses, and potentially driver's license numbers of registered Maine voters.

The town where the breach occurred has not been specified, and the infected computer has been disabled.
