Maine voters will decide today whether the state should borrow up to $150 million for a variety of transportation, education and infrastructure spending detailed in five separate ballot questions.
The largest of the bonds would allow the state to borrow up to $100 million for transportation projects, including around $44 million for road improvements, around $27 million for rehabilitating bridges and about $9 million in infrastructure projects at the International Marine Terminal in Portland, where Eimskip relocated its U.S. headquarters this year. That question will be the third on the ballot voters will see today.
The first question asks voters to approve borrowing up to $14 million for maintenance and repair for the Maine Army National Guard armories; the second seeks approval to borrow $15.5 million to be shared for improvements at various University of Maine System campuses; the fourth question asks for $4.5 million to support a $14 million classroom, office and laboratory project at the Maine Maritime Academy’s campus in Castine; and the fifth question asks for $15.5 million to be shared for various projects at campuses in the Maine Community College System.
