Grant to help laid off Maine Military Authority workers

The U.S. Department of Labor has given the state a $305,714 grant to fund training and re-employment services for the nearly 140 workers laid off at the Maine Military Authority earlier this month.

The Bangor Daily News reported the money comes to the Maine Department of Labor through the National Emergency Grant program, which provided the state $463,000 in 2011 and another $100,000 in 2012. That money was scheduled to run out in September, according to Ryan Pelletier, the director of economic and work force development at the Northern Maine Development Commission.

The latest grant will provide educational and skill training and career counseling for up to 50 of the laid-off workers.
