Wal-Mart has filed a tax appeal with the state, months after it failed to convince a Rockland appeals board that the city’s assessment of its former Route 1 store was excessive.
The Bangor Daily News reported that Wal-Mart is seeking a property tax rebate of more than $105,000 in its appeal with the State Board of of Property Tax Review on Dec. 23. Wal-Mart moved from its former Route 1 store to a new location in Thomaston in October 2013.
Wal-Mart originally filed a tax appeal with Rockland in February 2014 saying the city’s $8.5 million valuation in 2013 was far more than it should have been. The appeal was based on Wal-Mart’s $3.1 million sale of the property to Ocean State Job Lot in December 2013.
Following the Rockland assessor’s decision to not grant the appeal, the decision was later upheld by the city’s board of appeals. In making its decision, the board said Wal-Mart did not provide requested financial documentation related to the store’s operation. The company has argued that those documents are not relevant to the appeal.
