WalletHub: Maine has country's third-biggest tax burden

Maine has the third-highest tax burden in the United States, according to a WalletHub survey released ahead of the April 15 filing day.

That puts Maine behind only New York state, which topped the list, and Hawaii, in a tally of all 50 states. Alaska came in last overall.

Rankings were based on comparisons of three types of state tax burdens, namely property taxes, individual income taxes and sales an excises taxes — as a share of total personal income tax in each state.

Looking at individual categories, Maine was fifth-highest in terms of property tax burden (4.74%), and 15th highest in individual income tax burden (2.6%) and 25th in terms of its sales and excise tax burden (3.50%). WalletHub also found that red states have a lower tax burden than blue states.

Maine was listed fifth among states found to have highest property tax as a percentage of personal income, trailing New Hampshire, Vermont, New Jersey and Rhode Island.

A related report and infographic by WalletHub of 2019 tax day fun facts says that 150 million income tax returns are expected to be filed this year, 90% of them electronically.

It also finds that 4.6 million fewer taxpayers will receive refunds this filing season.
