Maine's economy may or may not be improving — but it's falling short of those in nearly every other state, a new study says.

The analysis, released June 3 by personal finance website WalletHub, ranks Maine as No. 43, or ninth-lowest, among states with the best economies.

The ranking compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 28 key indicators of economic performance and strength, and included criteria such as unemployment rate, gross domestic product growth, foreclosure rate and research investment per capita.

Maine's score ranked second-lowest in the Northeast, ahead of only Rhode Island, at No. 45.

The state of Washington took the top rung in the ranking, followed by Utah, No. 2, and Massachusetts, No. 3. Mississippi's economy ranked worst in the U.S., at No. 51.
