The Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Wells Water District Board of Trustees squelched any further talk of Poland Spring's efforts to extract water from its district late last month by voting unanimously to permanently remove from consideration a pending contract on the deal.
The contract that would have allowed Nestlé Waters North America, parent company of Poland Spring, to withdraw water from the district had been tabled indefinitely until the May 27 vote, according to the York County Coast Star. Trustee Jim Burrows of Kennebunkport told the online news source that the board took the vote to quell rumors that they were once again considering the contract with Poland Spring.
Water District Superintendent Norm Labbe, who did not support the vote, declaring it was a case of "politics trumping science and common sense," said it does not preclude the board from considering other extraction talks in the future, according to the paper. The Poland Spring request had been opposed by Save Our Water, a grassroots group opposed to large-scale water extraction.
