Waterville printing business to close

A longtime printing business in Waterville is scheduled to close later this month, affecting nine people. The owners cited the economy and industry changes for the closure.

Brothers Jim and Peter Mitchell will close Atkins Printing Service after 102 years in business, according to the Morning Sentinel. Nine employees will be laid off. The company offers digital and offset printing, binding services and computer design, and its clients include L.L.Bean. The Mitchells bought the business from the Atkins family in 2008. Jim Mitchell said the recession hit the company hard, and that competition from new technologies also played a factor in the decision to close the business.
