Saco's loss is Portland's gain with W.B. Mason moving its operations to the Pine Tree Industrial Park off Rand Road.
W.B. Mason, one of the country's largest distributors of office supplies, is leaving its former Saco location on 73 Industrial Park Road. Meanwhile, Portland's building inspector's office issued a permit to Welch Stencil of Scarborough on Aug. 17 to install a new sign for the renovated building, according to city documents.
Several attempts to get comment from company officials on why W.B. Mason chose to move its southern Maine facility to Portland, the size of the new facility and the number of people that will be employed there were unsuccessful. Attempts to get comment from Portland officials were also unsuccessful.
Peter Morelli, Saco's development director, told Mainebiz last week officials at Brockton, Mass.-based W.B. Mason indicated they needed more space to grow their southern Maine operations. He says the Saco facility is 10,000 square feet and W.B. Mason had occupied it since 2006. The company employed as many as 70 people there this year.
"We don't like to lose anybody," Morelli says. But the city has already been approached by a high-tech firm that is interested in leasing a portion of the Saco facility, he says.
The company, founded in 1898, employs more than 1,700 people at 28 locations in 10 states. Besides the new Portland location, W.B. Mason also has office and warehouse distribution facilities in Augusta and Bangor.
