An auction for Moosehead Furniture Co. in Monson netted the company a new owner who plans to restart production in the next few months.
Louise Jonaitis of Portland yesterday submitted a winning bid of $1.05 million for the former Moosehead Manufacturing Co. facility, according to the Bangor Daily News. Jonaitis, who owns Grand State O'Maine Land Co. in Newry and Hanover, said she plans to restart furniture-making operations in the next three to six months, but did not specify how many people she would employ. In July, Jonaitis and Steve LaFreniere bought the former Saunders Bros. dowel mill in Locke Mills with plans to manufacture rolling pins and rehire some of the 55 workers who lost their jobs when the mill closed in May.
Tardy-Connors LLC, the owners of Moosehead Furniture, stopped production in January, and the property went to auction. However, an 11th-hour bankruptcy filing canceled the auction. In April, the Passamaquoddy Tribe announced it was exploring buying the property, but in August said it decided to focus on other projects.
