Wells Fargo & Co. said Wednesday that it gave $372,900 to Maine nonprofits, schools and community organizations in 2018, including $45,000 in employee-driven donations.

The bank, which is based in San Francisco and has a wealth management office in Portland, said it focused its philanthropy around “urgent community issues” such as affordable housing, small business growth and access to education. Educational recipients include My Place Teen Center to provide quality out-of-school enrichment experiences for at-risk youth, and the Boys and Girls Club of Southern Maine, which received $18,000 for a summer reading program.

“We are determined to help people and communities, especially in underserved areas, succeed financially,” said Rob Small, senior vice president with Wells Fargo’s middle market banking division in Portland, in a news release.

“We will continue to provide philanthropy, volunteers, expertise and other resources to revitalize and strengthen local neighborhoods.”

Wells Fargo concentrated its philanthropic contributions in three areas identified urgent community issues. They are: affordable housing, small business growth and access to education.

Beyond the financial donations, Wells Fargo employees in Maine volunteered more than 600 hours in 2018 to support nonprofits and causes important to them.

“Part of what makes Wells Fargo unique is the generosity of our team members who help multiply our community impact,” Small said, adding that giving time can sometimes be worth more than money “because it puts our desire to build a strong community into action and gives us a tangible way to practically make a difference.”

Briana Curran, a Boston-based spokesperson for Wells Fargo, told Mainebiz by email that the company is excited to build on last year’s charity efforts with grants to the Travis Mills Foundation in Hallowell, the Betsy Ann Ross House of Hope in Augusta and Four Directions Development Corp. in Orono.

Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC) donated more than $444 million to nearly 11,000 nonprofits in 2018, with employees donating more than two million hours of volunteer time.
