Westbrook zoning changes advance

Westbrook City Councilors yesterday approved a task force's recommendation to rezone the Five Star Industrial Park -- the site of tensions between Idexx Laboratories and Pike Industries -- as a manufacturing district.

The council voted 6-1 to approve the recommendations for zoning changes, which include terms that would limit Pike's hours of operation and the frequency of its blasting, according to the Portland Press Herald. The task force requested more time to work with Pike, Idexx and other businesses to reach an agreement between the companies and the residents who oppose blasting in the Spring Street quarry located within the industrial park.

The council is scheduled to give the recommendations a second reading on June 7 and hold a public hearing.
