Western Maine entertainment center gets $300K grant

A $2.1 million project to launch a multi-faceted entertainment center in the Carrabassett Valley is moving forward after receiving $300,000 in federal funds it was originally denied.

The Daily Bulldog reported that the entertainment center, called Sugarbowl, is now expected to open by the end of the year and create 15 full-time jobs, with more jobs added depending on demand. The center, which will include a bowling alley, game room, pub and restaurant, is being built on the former Carrabassett Valley Grill property on Route 27.

The Sugarbowl project stalled earlier this year after it was originally denied a $450,000 grant from the federal Economic Development Program. The denial prompted developer Kerry Audet and Carrabessett Valley Town Manager Dave Cota to make a successful appeal with the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development, which led to the smaller award
