Wharf hotel proposal moves ahead

A proposal to build a five-story hotel on one of Portland's working wharves is being passed on to the city council for preliminary review.

The Community Development Committee passed on Eric Cianchette's proposal to build a $40 million, 150-room hotel on the Maine Wharf, which he owns, to the city council so they could ask questions and offer feedback, according to the Portland Press Herald. The paper said it's unusual for the city council to discuss a proposal before a review by the planning board, but Cianchette said he needs to know if the council is willing to change zoning ordinances that prohibit development on the waterfront before moving ahead. The plan, unveiled last month, calls for the first level of the Maine Wharf to remain for marine use.

The $40 million proposal comes on the heels of the disintegration of the city's plan to redevelop the Maine State Pier.
