Voters in Whitneyville have approved a 180-day moratorium on a medical marijuana dispensary, a month after the state chose a nonprofit to run an operation there.
The unanimous moratorium decision will bar Primary Organic Therapy Inc. from opening a dispensary in town until Feb. 28, and will give town officials time to form a committee to develop local land use codes and determine a suitable location, according to the Bangor Daily News. After receiving the state's approval to serve Washington and Hancock counties last month, the nonprofit told the paper it planned to approach the town about opening in a former doctor's office on Main Street, but Selectman Nate Pennell told the paper that town officials were not contacted about the organization's plans. According to its application, Primary Organic Therapy projects annual sales of $2.4 million. A total of 31 residents voted on the moratorium Monday.
Statewide, eight marijuana dispensary licenses have been awarded to five nonprofits. A handful of other communities have placed temporary bans on dispensaries, including Topsham, Waterville and Brewer.
