Windham GM dealer faces uncertain future

Another General Motors dealer in Maine has confirmed that its affiliation with the bankrupt car dealer may run out next year.

Sebago Lake Chevrolet President Brad Woodbrey said the 81-year-old Windham dealership received a letter from GM stating its franchise agreement may not be renewed when it expires in October 2010, according to Current Publishing. Woodbrey said the letter came as a surprise, especially since Sebago Lake Chevrolet met its sales quota for the first quarter of 2009 and in doing so beat the same period for 2008, the news organization reported. Even if its GM affiliation does end, Woodbrey said the dealership will continue to sell used cars and operate its service and parts department. The dealership's location on Route 302 could help attract interest from other car companies looking for franchises, Woodbrey told the news organization. Sebago Lake Chevrolet, first founded by Woodbrey's grandfather in Standish in 1928, has about 30 employees.

Last month, GM sent letters to 1,100 undisclosed U.S. dealers notifying them that their franchise agreements could be on the chopping block by the end of 2010. A handful of Maine dealerships received those letters, including Hartley's Auto Mall in Newport.
