A Harpswell woman has pleaded not guilty to charges that she stole nearly $80,000 from the Ramada Inn in Lewiston.
The Sun Journal reported 38-year-old Carrie Richardson is being represented by a court-appointed attorney and is now being held on $250,000 cash bail.
Police allege Richardson embezzled money from the hotel, where she worked as a bookkeeper, by diverting deposits intended for the hotel’s bank and by making out vendor checks to herself, stamped with the signature of the hotel’s owner, George Gendron.
Authorities say a consultant hired to project the hotel’s earnings for the upcoming year discovered the discrepancy.
At the time of her arrest in late July, Richardson also was wanted by police agencies in California for separate charges of embezzlement from the Escondido Pop Warner Football league and from the North County Yamaha Shop in San Marcos. Authorities there said they would not seek to extradite Richardson for those charges.
If found guilty, Richardson faces any combination of up to 10 years in prison and up to a $20,000 fine.
