Wood pellet cos. win $288K

Two wood pellet companies in Maine are receiving a total of nearly $300,000 in federal money aimed at boosting biofuel production.

Woods Pellet Co. in Athens is receiving $163,000 and Corinth Wood Pellets is getting $125,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Bioenergy Program for Advanced Biofuels, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. The program funds companies generating biofuels from various sources, including cellulose, crop residue, and animal, food and yard waste material. U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe announced the funding in a joint release, saying it will lower production costs for the companies and help boost the state's alternative energy resources.
