A northern Maine company that refurbishes military vehicles is planning to lay off half of its 350-work force by March.
Tim Corbett, CEO of Maine Military Authority in Limestone, told the Bangor Daily News the company will have to lay off 150 employees by March 1 if it does not receive new work orders. The company, which refurbishes Humvees and other vehicles for the Army National Guard, did not receive its customary Department of Defense funding, as a federal earmark failed to pass Congresss due to the United States' shrinking military presence in Iraq. The company anticipated funding cutbacks and has been working to find other work. "We have worked with our congressional representatives to fend off cutbacks as long as we could, but this time we weren't successful," Corbett told the paper.
Corbett said he's hopeful a Government Services Administration's decision to list MMA as a reliable vendor for Humvee repairs will generate new business for the company, according to the paper.
