Wood-to-energy projects net $5.5M

Eight wood-to-energy conversion projects in Maine are receiving more than $5.5 million in federal stimulus funding.

The grants, awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service, will partially fund oil-to-wood heating projects at six school systems, the University of Maine at Presque Isle and Northern Maine Medical Center, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Conservation. The funding will also leverage $6.4 million in local investments for the projects.

It's the second round of grants awarded by the USDA Forest Service. In total, the program has given $11.4 million to 13 projects in Maine, creating and retaining more than 185 jobs, according to the press release.
