Woods drops gubernatorial bid, endorses Michaud

Steve Woods on Tuesday dropped his campaign for the Democratic gubernatorial primary nomination and endorsed U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, who could be uncontested as the party’s standard-bearer in the race.

The Portland Press Herald reported Woods, CEO of TideSmart Global and Yarmouth town councilor, said he feels Michaud is the best candidate to improve the state’s economy and that he wanted to clear the way for Michaud to focus his campaign against incumbent Republican Gov. Paul LePage and independent Eliot Cutler.

Woods announced his bid for governor as a Democrat in November after an unsuccessful run as an independent for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Olympia Snowe. In dropping out of that race, Woods endorsed independent Angus King.
