Waterstone Retail has begun construction on a 115,000-square-foot shopping center in Scarborough that is luring three retail tenants away from South Portland.
The Needham, Mass.-based developer said it broke ground at Scarborough Gallery with local officials on Thursday. The project is scheduled to be completed this fall.
The shopping center will include Bob’s Discount Furniture, Marshalls and HomeGoods, three large retail tenants that are moving from their current location a few miles away at The Shops at Clark’s Pond in South Portland. Other tenants include PetSmart and several other specialty retailers and restaurants.
The developer said Scarborough Gallery was designed in “keeping with the other components of the Scarborough Gallery Master Plan, including the adjacent Walmart and Lowe’s stores.”
“Like the other retailers in the area, the project is of regional significance and will serve as a Scarborough-based destination for shoppers from all over southern Maine,” Karen Martin, executive director of the Scarborough Economic and Development Corp., said in a prepared statement.
