Work/life improvements sought for South Portland’s West End
New business enticements and improved transportation are part of the plans on tap for revitalization of South Portland’s West End.
The Forecaster reported that neighborhood connectivity, regional access for residents, sustainability, increasing recreation and open space, and developing a neighborhood center are cited in the West End Neighborhood Master Plan as top objectives.
“The availability of both market-rate and subsidized affordable housing makes this area appealing to young families, seniors and recent immigrants,” the report says.
The plan calls for making the West End safer and easier to walk, bike and drive in, thus improving access to schools, employment and services. It also calls for zoning changes and affordable housing tax increment financing to help new businesses.
As part of the plan, a mixed-use building, with housing on the upper floors and retail on the first floor, is being proposed by Avesta Housing and Quang Nguyen, owner of a local convenience store. Discussions include the possibility of including space for a business incubator.
Earlier this year, discussions were also underway regarding development of South Portland’s Knightville neighborhood — specifically, the proposed redevelopment of a historic building dating back to 1900 that formerly housed the Griffin Club, an Irish sports bar.
