Maine’s number of workplace fatalities dropped from 2011 to 2012, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The bureau’s latest figures estimate Maine had 19 fatal workplace incidents in 2012, a decrease from 26 in 2011. That total for 2011 was higher than 15 of the previous 20 years. The latest preliminary numbers fall below that 20-year average of 22 work-related deaths per year.
The preliminary data does not break down Maine’s workplace fatalities by industry sector, but previous years’ data showed transportation accidents made up over 60% of the total.
Nationally, the latest report highlights logging and fishing-related workers as the occupations with the highest fatal work injury rate, meaning the number of fatal injuries per 100,000 workers. For loggers, the fatal workplace injury rate was 127.8. For fishing-related workers, it was 117.0.
The latest preliminary data release is scheduled to be revised some time next year.
