Worries emerge before merger

When Verizon Wireless buys Rural Cellular Corporation, which operates Unicel in Maine, some Mainers might experience dead spots or have to get new phones.

The two national companies use different and incompatible cell-network technology, the Portland Press Herald reported. Nancy Stark, a Verizon spokeswoman, told the paper the company will upgrade Unicel's network and contact customers about network plans when the sale is complete. The $2.67 billion merger must be approved by the Federal Communications Commission.

Unicel, one of the smaller wireless companies in Maine, provides service to rural parts of the state. Wayne Jortner, senior counsel in the Maine Public Advocate's Office, said the loss of a cell phone company in Maine could lead to less choice and higher prices for rural areas.
