Year-round Campobello-Canada ferry considered
The Year‑Round Ferry Development Committee on Campobello is investigating the establishment of a year-round ferry from the island, off Lubec, to the Canada mainland.
The Quoddy Tides reported that the committee is exploring the idea in order to mitigate the need for residents to cross the Canada-U.S. border. Committee chief Gerald "Brent" MacPherson said the border crossing might deter potential new island residents.
Still, concerns about a ferry include the potential to jeopardize the 24-hour open schedule for the international bridge to Lubec, a link for daily activities and emergency access for things like gas and medications. Cost issues were also raised.
New Brunswick officials offered conditional support but asked the committee to determine the level of community support. The committee has tentatively retained a marketing specialist to conduct a public meeting and help establish plans.
